I have experienced a GoDaddy lockdown for a month attempting to transfer my domains to OMNIS.com. Today I finally filed a complaint with ICANN as my new registrar suggested. I told them GoDaddy is holding my domains hostage more or less. This is the deal. I NEVER had a password for my private registration through DOMAINSBYPROXY.com which is a GoDaddy company. I have requested log in info for 4 weeks now. They send me one log in number then I am UNABLE to gain or even reset the non existing password. I guess GoDaddy thinks they will wear me down after 4 weeks. Mr. Parsons can write about how in control of his success he is on his blog but the opposite is the reality. Usually when people have to brag that much the reality is quite the opposite.
I am the type who will take this to court and make a fed case out of it.
AVOID GODADDY THE OWNER HAS GONE LOCO.
By the way when I forwarded one domain to a hosting site it was stuck on a GoDaddy ad page for 10 days and ruined a presentation I had as customers were directed to my site only to find a GoDaddy ad page. When I called and complained the support person chuckled and said 'Oh it was just a glitch". Sure it was.
Finally do not expect any government or other agency to protect the consumer because they are all broken so research the new registrar thoroughly or you will be very sorry.

It amazes me that they are as big as they are. People often come to us looking for help as the transfer process is unclear, they get no support and feel like they are trapped. Will anything change - very unlikely !

One minor correction to your article:

Godaddy is not doing this because they have become large and insensitive. I tried to do business with them about 6 months after they opened and the same problems with transferring to and from other registrars existed then.

They've never been any good.

Sean, I have a reseller account through ResellerClub.com. I get domains at near cost and every domain includes free email forwarding, web forwarding, and privacy protection. Fabulous.com also has similar prices and services, though I prefer ResellerClub because they have an API.

The yProxy.com domain is registered at GoDaddy for historical reasons. As I spoke of in my article, they used to have competitive pricing and service. The domain doesn't expire any time soon, so I'll probably just leave it there for awhile, considering I don't need privacy protection or any of the other services that GoDaddy charges for.

I notice that this blog is registered through Go Daddy. Would you care to share the name of the better registar that you speak of but don't name? Also, if you don't like Go Daddy, why is this blog still registered with them?

I'm interested in making a change, but I want to switch to a good registrar. What is the other one (not Name.com) that you spoke of but didn't name?

I came across this blog as I am also having problems transfering domains away from godaddy. The difference here is that I run a small webhosting and domain registration business myself and got involved on behalf of a client who is trying to move their domains to my company. I finally managed to get 4 domains transferred across but after several weeks still have 3 .com's and a .co.uk domain with them. I am a member of Nominet (UK domain registrar) so I have a reasonable amount of experience here and know what I am talking and their process to move domains away is one of the most difficult and slowest I have ever come across (especially for a .co.uk which is normally the easiest type of domain to transfer). Like many very large businesses, my impression is that they have lost sight of their customers and their support seems to be non-existent.

If anyone would like help transferring domains away and would like a small, friendly domain registration company, please pay us a visit and I'll do what I can to help.

I had a similar problem, and have contacted the BBB and ICANN because they violated ICANN's policies on notifying the winning registrar of the cancelation, and they ignored my contractual acceptance claiming that I denied the transfer. But according the the BBB, GoDaddy seems to have a good reputation of resolving conflicts, and they currently have an A+ rating.

I've heard too many bad things about GoDaddy and am now contemplating moving approx. 16 domains out of their clutches. Obviously I'm extremely nervous about this and want to make sure that I'm well prepared - can you detail the steps required to shift a domain away from GD?

Many thanks,

Ole

Editor's Response:
Ole, it's not very complicated. Simply follow these steps:

Unlock the domains at GoDaddy before you begin.

Retrieve your Authorization Code for each domain from GoDaddy.

Initiate the transfer at your new registrar. You will use the authorization codes from step 1 and you will have to pay the new registrar to renew the domains.

Once the transfer has initiated, you can approve the transfer manually by logging into your GoDaddy account and approving the transfer. Otherwise, simply wait 5 days, and the domains will be transferred.
